1. The Color Gold
50th wedding anniversaries are traditionally denoted with the color gold. The majority of parties incorporate gold in some manner, the color depicting a fruitful and prosperous relationship. If you would like your party to have traditional elements, incorporate accents of gold into your color scheme. For example, gold tablecloths, gold balloons, gold streamers, and even gold frosting on your cake, will leave your party glowing! If gold is not your preferred color but you appreciate its symbolism, you can pick a complementary color to go with it!
2. Wedding Memorabilia Decorations
Celebrate your wedding all over again by showcasing your wedding memorabilia. Display the wedding dress for your guests to admire. You can place your wedding photos into gold frames and use them as centerpieces. Decorate the walls with copies of your wedding invitations or other memories. Incorporate gold into all these ideas to keep with the tradition. This option is extremely personal and creates a sense of partnership between you and your guests.
3. Violet Flowers
Violets are the flowers traditionally used to symbolize 50 years of marriage. They are a deep purple color and can make any boring party space vibrant and colorful. If you choose to use this flower, you could create garlands out of violets to hang around the room or place them in vases for your centerpieces. Additionally, you could incorporate candied violets in your dessert. Check your local florist for beautiful violet arrangements.
4. Past v. Present
Photos truly say a thousand words and decorating your space with multiple memories from your marriage can make your party truly special. Focus on the time that has passed by decorating your 50th wedding anniversary with photos of you at the beginning of your marriage and some of you from the present. Create a digital photo book and project it onto a screen in chronological order of your life since marriage. You could even create personalized photo placemats that your guests can take home!
5. Life-size Cut-outs
Make life-size cutouts of the couple during important points in their marriage (the wedding/honeymoon, the birth of a child, special trips, etc). This option is creative and comedic. If you choose to play games at your party, use the cutouts as prizes. If you choose to keep the cutouts for yourselves, they can be used as physical reminders of your lifelong commitment to one another. Check your local print shop if they can make such cut-outs!
6. Ice Carving
If you would like to have an extremely elegant party, ice sculptures are a lovely touch for any event. Certain experienced sculptures can carve nearly anything into a block of ice. Have one of your wedding memories carved for you and your guests to admire. Check your local ice sculptor for quotes on a sculpture.
7. Gold Wine Bottle Centerpieces
One way to make your anniversary really stand out is having great centerpieces for the tables. Spray paint old wine bottles gold and fill them with assortments of flowers or golden decorations. This is an innovative and reusable option for your party. P.S. these centerpieces could double as beautiful party favors!
8. Balloon Bouquets
A good way to make your party space feel full and colorful is to put balloon bouquets around the room! Mix different colors of balloons into the same bouquet. Use gold and violet as well as other complementary colors. Also, certain party stores can blow up big gold 50 balloons. Check your local party supply store for arrangements ideas and quotes.
9. Deck the Halls
No matter what time of year it is, gold Christmas ornament bulbs are a classy way of bringing joy and cheer to your anniversary party. Hang gold ornaments all around the room to really emphasize the traditional 50th anniversary color of gold!
50th Anniversary Party Ideas: Favors
1. Mini Personal Champagne
A gift that your guests are sure to love – champagne! Go to your local liquor or wine store and ask if they have miniature champagne bottles. Personalizing the bottles with custom name labels and patterned sleeves will make this small token appreciation something special and worth keeping.
2. Gold Tradition
Gold is the traditional color used for 50th wedding anniversaries. Table cloths, balloons, cakes, and chairs are usually gold in color. Celebrate this tradition by gifting gold-colored favors. For example, you can give guests gold-wrapped chocolate or other various candies! If you are looking for something more elegant or sophisticated, gold-colored candles or tealights make great gifts for your guest. Also, gold bottle openers, wine toppers, or champagne bottles are good party favor options for any avid wine drinker. Anything wrapped or accented in gold will take your favor to the next level.
3. Theme Favors
If your party has a specific theme, using a party favor that matches that theme is always a good idea! For example, if you are having a movie-themed anniversary party, a gift card to a local movie theatre would be a great idea! If you have decided on a floral-themed party, spray painting some old mason jars with gold paint and filling them with fake flowers is always a great option. You want your guests to take something home that reminds them of your amazing day!
4. Picture This
Pictures are always memorable but having a nice frame lying around isn’t always accessible. Sending your guests home with personalized gold frames or empty photo boxes are great options. It’s up to them what they put in them! They could put a picture of the happy couple in the frames or if your party has a photo booth, your guests could take those photos and place them in the photo boxes. Pictures are capable of capturing the most amazing moments at any party, sometimes guests just need something to put them in!
5. Couple Traits
Some guests are very open about what their favorite hobbies and past-times are. If you know that a certain attendee has a favorite activity, give that guest a party favor related to that hobby. For example, if your guest is known for loving the beach, give your guests a beach ball or a custom beach towel! If your party-goer likes to paint, a paint palette with a small engraving at the bottom is also a good option. Leaving a personalized note that says: “Thanks for playing in the sand with us these past 50 summers!” also adds a memorable touch.
6. Personal Wine Glasses
If your guests are of legal drinking age, send your guests off with a personalized wine glass! Companies can put nearly anything on a wine glass so creating a piece for each person is a unique way to say thank you. You could include the date of the wedding, your names, and a traditional “50th Wedding Anniversary” graphic towards the bottom of your glass. P.S. make sure to use gold lettering if you have chosen a traditional theme. A gold-colored wine topper would be a nice complement to go with your personalized wine glass.
7. Key chains to carry the memories
Send your guests off with gold-colored key chains! Have the key chains engraved with a large 50 or a message that says, “Happy 50th Wedding Anniversary to the couples last name here!”. Your guests will be sure to remember these 50th anniversary party favors every time they pick up their keys!
8. Photos from the party
Professionally taken photos are a great option for anyone who does not have time to order party favors. If you do decide to hire a photographer for your party, see if they can do on-site photo printing or distribute a personalized link to each guest. Most people do not have the money or time to get professional photos taken of them, so receiving a beautiful picture of your guest and their significant other/family is a treat. P.S. see if any local photographers can do on-site photos and printing!
50th Anniversary Party Ideas: Games
1. The Couple’s Facts
For a couple that has been together for fifty years, they probably have had almost every party imaginable. The people that will be attending their party will likely know them very well, so stump the guests by asking them questions about their time dating.
Before the party, gather a list of up to twenty facts about the couple’s first years together. Guests probably won’t get the answers correct, but making up what they think may have happened can be so much fun! After everyone has read their answers aloud, have the couples say what actually happened.
2. Dance Interpretation
Have your guests choreograph and perform a dance that they think embodies the couple’s life together. Watch as some of your guests try to interpretive dance their way through marriage, having kids, and buying a house. For younger kids who might not understand this game, have them create a dance for the honorees to a song of their choice.
3. Get Closer!
Create an “island” by ordering some large sheets of blue paper and brown paper (or finding it locally here) and placing it in the center of the floor, one for every two guests at the party. Start off with a large square piece of blue paper measuring at least 4 feet by 4 feet. Place a sheet of brown paper on top of it – at least 3 feet by 3 feet.
Instruct each pair of guests to stand on the blue paper however they wish and not fall off of the island and into the “water” (onto the floor). Once everyone seems to be standing on their island, ask them to fold their brown paper in half (thereby making the island much smaller) and again assemble themselves on it. Continue “shrinking” the island until only one pair is left standing.
4. Our Life
Milestones are an important part of a long marriage, and reminiscing in these old memories can be enjoyable for the couple, as well as all of the attendees. Get a list of the milestones in their lives and scramble up the order. Ask each guest to try to put them in the right order and then have the couple read off the correct order by showing off pictures of their first home, first car, etc.
5. Pot of Gold
This is a relay race between married couples. Buy some gold buckets and enough lemons so each couple has at least six. One spouse will carry a lemon under his/her chin to their partner who will get the lemon without using their hands and carry it the rest of the way to a bucket and drop it in.
Whoever can get the most lemons in their gold bucket in 50 seconds wins. You can substitute anything else you prefer instead of lemons as well.
6. Musical Chairs
Have your guests play musical chairs with a playlist of songs played at your wedding! It will surely stir up everyone’s competitive side. Hearing the songs played at the wedding will also bring memories of the wedding back to mind making it very nostalgic!
7. Famous Couples
Write down the name of a famous person who belongs in a pair and tape that person’s name to someone’s back. No one should know who is taped to their back. They must find their partner by having people give hints as to who they are supposed to be. Ex: John Smith and Pocahontas, Sonny and Cher, Romeo and Juliet, Adam and Eve, Barbie and Ken.
8. Never Have I Ever
Someone will make up a list of questions of common things that may have occurred to the guests and the couple. For example, you can ask if you ever ran out of gas, flew in an airplane, got kicked out of a restaurant, etc.
The funnier the scenarios the better, especially if you know that someone playing has done one of them. Have people line up shoulder to shoulder. When a question is asked and a person is guilty of the thing asked, they take a step forward. See who can make it across the finish line first. These games make everyone feel young again!
